Master of Leadership and Theology

About this course

The Master of Leadership and Theology is designed for Graduates to apply knowledge around Catholic identity and mission directly to professional leadership contexts, through this course.

The Master of Leadership and Theology qualifies individuals who apply an advanced body of knowledge in a range of leadership contexts, particularly religious and not for profit, for professional practice or scholarship and as a pathway for further learning.

Course Details

Admission to the Master of Leadership and Theology requires:

  • Satisfactory completion of an AQF Level 7 undergraduate degree in any discipline.
  • Desirable but not mandatory – at least two years experience in a leadership role in an area aligned with the courses’s focus, for example: church leadership, educational leadership within a religious school, ministry, and social services provided by a religious organisation.

 

Note: English language proficiency, Special Entry and Professional Entry criteria will apply as per SCD policy.

 

Entry Pathways
  • Students who have completed an AQF Level 7 undergraduate degree in any discipline will complete the full 16-unit Master of Leadership and Theology course.
  • Students may enter the Master of Leadership and Theology directly or enter through the nested Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology or the Graduate Diploma of Leadership and Theology. Students will receive full credit for the units they complete within the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma programs in accordance with the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.
  • Students who have completed prior studies in the areas of Leadership or Theology may be eligible for credit if these studies were at the same AQF level as this course. Credit will be considered according to the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning policy.
  • Given the specific nature of this course and its goal of integrating leadership and theology, no credit will be awarded for a AQF Level 7 undergraduate degree in leadership. Students who have completed a AQF Level 7 undergraduate degree in theology will be exempt from T8106 Foundations for Theological Studies and may select an elective unit in its place.

 

English Proficiency

Applicants whose entry qualifications were obtained in an institution where English is not the language of instruction normally require a minimum IELTS (or equivalent) overall score of at least 7.0 with no subtest below 7.0.

The Master of Leadership and Theology requires the completion of 144 credit points (16 units) which shall include:

  • T8106 – Foundations for Theological Studies 
  • P8155 – Foundations of Christian Leadership 
  • M8161 – Leadership: Mission, Identity and Community 
  • Core Unit x 7
  • P9264 – Advanced Studies in Leadership for the 21st Century: Models of Leadership 
  • M9265 – Pluralism and Cultural Leadership 
  • P9263 – Leading Self, Leading Others 
  • P9265 – The Leader as Explorer, Guide and Meaning Maker 
  • P9236 – Theology and Practice of Social Justice
  • P9290 – Capstone Project in Leadership and Theology 
Knowledge

Graduates will have: 

  • a body of knowledge that includes the understanding of recent developments in the field of leadership, theological studies, religious organisations and and/or professional practice in the field 
  • knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to work and learning in the field of leadership and theology. 

     

Skills

Graduates will have:

  • cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and professional practice or scholarship in the field of Leadership and Theology particularly as applied to religious organisations 
  • cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories in the field of Leadership and Theology and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice 
  • cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level 
  • communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, theological principles, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions in the field of Leadership and Theology to specialist and non-specialist audiences 
  • technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice or scholarship in the field of Leadership and Theology.

 

Applications of Knowledge and Skills

Graduates will have the ability to: 

  • demonstrate creativity, theological acuity and initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning 
  • demonstrate a high level of personal autonomy and accountability 
  • plan and execute a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship.

A candidate may seek credit up to a maximum of 72 credit points in the Master of Leadership and Theology in accordance with the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

 

Students who have held a leadership position for two or more years may be eligible for up to 36 credit points in Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in the Master of Leadership and Theology.

 

Applicants for RPL must submit a performance portfolio and letter of support from their employer which demonstrates how their work relates to the following Course Specific Graduate Outcomes:

  • The ability to demonstrate a high level of skill in the leadership of self, others, systems and learning. 
  • Clear communication of complex ideas related to leadership and theology to a variety of professional and non-professional audiences, including by using new and emerging technologies.
  • A capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively and with a willingness to take responsibility for their own work.

 

Applications for RPL will be assessed in accordance with the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

The Master of Leadership and Theology is offered through the individual colleges and an application for enrolment must be made to the Registrar of the teaching institution. The registrar will be able to help you with any information regarding your study, including fees, units, mode of delivery and timetable.

 

A student is designated as full-time if enrolled in three units (27 credit points) or more in a semester or the equivalent in a trimester. Sydney College of Divinity offers a wide range of units and students have the option to study one or more units across the colleges delivering Sydney College of Divinity awards, whilst enrolled with one college.
