The Practice of Worship

This postgraduate unit  examines worship in varying developmental, social and cultural contexts. It includes the purpose of and skills for leadership in worship in church and other settings e.g. school, the nature, rationale for, and purpose of participation in worship, preparation for worship including the elements of a worship service, the relationship between them, and choice of hymns, music, symbols, imagery, and worship in response to culture, mission, pastoral issues, technology, change and development.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. appraise contemporary social and cultural context, extrapolate future trends, and forecast future trends in worship
  2. analyse and take account of the social, cultural, corporate, and developmental context of the worshippers
  3. creatively design worship times incorporating variations in style and structure
  4. critique worship times with reference to their social and cultural context
  5. lead worship times that effectively communicate in different contexts.
