Minor Research Essay

The unit Minor Research Essay enables students to develop specialised knowledge and skills in a particular discipline by research that demonstrates their capacity to proceed to further professional practice or highly skilled learning. Students who achieve a Grade of Distinction or higher in this unit may include that result as a part of the entry requirement for a higher research degree in SCD.  The unit is an Elective unit which, when applied to a specific Discipline, forms part of a Specialisation within that Discipline within the postgraduate awards.

This unit is generic and can be applied to any discipline or sub-discipline. A “research” generic unit can foster independent research and study skills. It can enhance initiative and creativity as students pursue ideas and areas of interest in the subject area. In this way, generic units seek to provide a learning environment that fosters increased independence in learning combined with a higher degree of student-centredness.
