Pentateuch in Context

The unit Pentateuch in Context (CALD) develops the knowledge and interpretive and exegetical skills acquired in the prerequisite introductory Biblical Studies unit(s). It examines the historical context, literary forms, and theological content of the Pentateuch.  It gives due consideration to the reception and application of these within the students’ cultural context. It may form part of a major or sub-major in Biblical Studies.

This unit is available only to candidates enrolled in the BTh/BMin (CALD Stream).

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Clearly present the major contents of the books of the Pentateuch
  2. Identify the principal scholarly issues concerning the historical and theological formation of the Pentateuch
  3. Analyse the literary forms that make up the Pentateuch and their contribution to the unity of the text
  4. Exegete selected passages from the Pentateuch, using an accepted methodology
  5. Incorporate and apply the insights gained from the study of the Pentateuch within the students’ own cultural and ministerial context.
