Ecclesiastical Latin
This postgraduate unit introduces the basic grammatical and syntactical knowledge that will lead to a grasp of the Latin ecclesiastical writings. It involves study of basic grammar, common Latin phraseology, Latin hymns, Latin prayers, and Latin liturgical texts, and Vatican documents.
All A units are not included in the structure of Majors or Sub-majors (UG studies) or in concentration or specialisation (PG studies).

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this unit students will be able to:
- Identify and explain the basic elements of Latin grammar within the broader context of English grammar and syntax
- critically assess the influence of Church Latin on Western culture, language, music and language idiom
- develop a basic understanding with the language structure and vocabulary encountered in scriptural, liturgical and patristic texts
- adapt and apply knowledge gained to ecclesiastical texts
- verify the place of the Latin language in the heritage of the Church
