Dead Sea Scrolls

The unit Dead Sea Scrolls introduces students to an in-depth study of the history and theology of the major texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls. As an Advanced Elective unit, this unit builds on the critical skills formed in pre-requisite study and forms a part of a Specialisation in the Discipline of Biblical Studies.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Give an informed and detailed account of the historical, religious, and cultural background to the Dead Sea Scrolls.
  2. Explain the political and academic issues behind the publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
  3. Present a scholarly interpretation of the theological themes of the major Scrolls.
  4. Give an informed exegesis of selected passages from the Dead Sea Scrolls.
  5. Synthesise the insights gained from the study of the Scrolls and apply them to research on the New Testament.
