Dead Sea Scrolls

This postgraduate unit  investigates the history and theology of the major texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls.  It examines the history of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, their historical, religious and cultural background, the structure and contents of the major Scrolls, detailed study of major theological themes in selected scrolls and their relation to the Bible.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. account at an advanced level for the complex historical, religious and cultural background of production of the Dead Sea Scrolls
  2. explain the political and academic issues involved in the publication of the Scrolls
  3. interpret the theological themes of major Dead Sea Scrolls texts
  4. exegete selected passages from the Dead Sea Scrolls
  5. integrate insights from Dead Sea Scroll study into research on both Old and New Testament texts
