Study Paths A and B

Sydney College of Divinity courses and awards are organised in terms of the following two study paths.

PATH A: for those who begin their theological studies with an undergraduate theology award

Path A is structured around the Bachelor of Theology and the Bachelor of Ministry as the primary undergraduate awards in theology and ministry which serve as a basis for subsequent graduate study to the highest levels. The minimum entry requirement is tertiary matriculation.  Students who complete the Bachelor of Theology or Bachelor of Ministry may move on to the Bachelor of Theology (Honours) or the Bachelor of Ministry (Honours) respectively, or the Master of Arts or the Master of Theology and hence to higher research degrees, the Master of Philosophy, the Doctor of Ministry, the Doctor of Philosophy and the Doctor of Theology.

a) Pre-degree Awards

Diploma of Ministry: A 1 year full-time, 3 year part-time program of study in theology, biblical studies and Christian ministry and practice related disciplines. This award is available in distance education mode
Diploma of Theology: A 1 year full-time,3 year part-time program of study in theology, biblical studies and related disciplines. This award is available in distance education mode.
Diploma of Christian Studies: A 1 year full-time, 3 year part-time program of study in theology, biblical studies and related disciplines. This is made up of Bachelor of Theology/Ministry degree level units. This award is available in distance education mode.

b)  Undergraduate Degrees

Associate Degree of Christian Thought and Practice: A 2 year full-time, 6 year part-time program of theological study with special focus on Christian Thought (biblical studies, theology, philosophy, church history) and/or on Christian Practice (pastoral counselling, worship and liturgy, mission, pastoral theology, Christian spirituality, Christian ethics). This award is available in distance education mode.
Bachelor of Ministry:

 

A 3 year full-time, 9 year part-time program leading to the primary undergraduate qualification in ministry. The Bachelor of Ministry is a primary undergraduate award which provides a broad and coherent study of Christian Life and Ministry and related studies in Biblical Studies and Theology through a structure of majors and sub-majors.  This degree prepares candidates for professional and lay Christian ministry and for further learning beyond the degree.

In order to ensure coherence of structure and sequencing of units, a student can obtain the Bachelor of Ministry only by fulfilling the particular subject area and unit requirements of a Teaching Body authorised to offer the award and in which the student is enrolled. This award is available in distance education mode.

Bachelor of Theology: A 3 year full-time, 9 year part-time program leading to the primary undergraduate qualification in theology. The Bachelor of Theology provides a broad and coherent study of theology and related disciplines through a structure of majors and sub-majors. c) Postgraduate Degrees

Bachelor of Ministry
(Honours): 
A 1 year full-time, 3 year part-time program for Sydney College of Divinity Bachelor of Ministry graduates (or equivalent). The award provides opportunity for preparatory research as a stepping stone to research in ministry at the highest level.
Bachelor of Theology
(Honours):
A 1 year full-time, 3 year part-time program for Sydney College of Divinity Bachelor of Theology graduates (or equivalent). The award provides opportunity for preparatory research as a stepping stone to research in theology at the highest level.
Master of Arts: A 1.5 year full-time, 4.5 year part-time program of studies taken from a designated list of both core and elective units, available to candidates who hold a bachelor degree in Theology or Ministry. This award is available in distance education mode.
Master of Theology: A 1.5 full-time, 4.5 year part-time program of graduate study in theology and related disciplines for candidates with the Bachelor of Theology or equivalent, who wish to pursue theological studies in greater depth and with greater rigour.  This award is available in distance education mode.

The research awards into which Path A articulates are Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Theology, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Ministry.

PATH B – Graduate programs for those who have completed a three year undergraduate award

Path B provides programs in theology and related disciplines for students who have already gained a three-year undergraduate degree in another field. Students may complete a variety of awards from Graduate Certificates up to the Master of Divinity, with various entry and exit points. Specialised awards are available in particular disciplines through the Master of Arts, which can also be taken as exit points from the Master of Divinity. The Graduate Certificate in Arts, the Graduate Diploma of Arts and the Master of Arts are “nested” in order to provide students with the opportunity to undertake theological subjects at graduate level with an option as to entry and exit points.

On completion of appropriate graduate studies a student may move on to either the research interdisciplinary awards, Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy, or in the case of the Master of Divinity on to the purely theological award Doctor of Theology. A specialised opportunity for advanced research is available with the Doctor of Ministry, which incorporates the pursuit of advanced study in Christian Life and Ministry by research at the highest academic level in the context of professional practice.

Graduate Certificate in Arts: A 0.5 year full-time, 1.5 year part-time program of studies in which candidates apply a body of theological knowledge in a range of contexts relating to ministry and/or further learning. Successful completion of this award allows entry into the Master of Arts program. This award is available in distance education mode.
Graduate Diploma of Arts: A 1 year full-time, 3 year part-time program of studies in which candidates apply a body of theological knowledge in a range of contexts relating to ministry and/or further learning. This award is available in distance education mode.
Master of Arts: A 1- 1.5 year full-time, 3 – 4.5 year part-time program of studies taken from a designated list of both core and elective units. Entry into the 1 year stream of this award requires the prior completion of the SCD Graduate Certificate in Arts (or equivalent AQF Level 8 award in theological or ministerial studies). This award is available in distance education mode.
Master of Divinity: A 3 year full-time, 9 year part-time graduate entry program for students undertaking initial theological studies.  It provides a comprehensive education in theology comparable in breadth and depth to the Bachelor of Theology, including a deeper and theological understanding, spiritual formation, and cultural literacy that will prepare candidates for ordained or other professional ministry in church, parachurch or non-profit organizations, and other similar vocational settings. This award is available in distance education mode.
Master of Theological Studies: A 1 year full-time, 3 year part-time graduate entry program for students undertaking initial theological studies.  This award is available in distance education mode.

a) Postgraduate Research Awards

Master of Philosophy: A 1 year full-time, 2 year part-time program of graduate study in theology and related disciplines by research and the submission of a thesis for candidates with a Bachelor (Hons) degree or equivalent with results at Class II, Division 1, from the Sydney College of Divinity or an equivalent institution.
Doctor of Ministry: A 3-4 years full-time or 6-8 years part-time higher award by research (80%) and coursework (20%) for candidates who have obtained or are qualified to obtain a four-year Bachelor degree, or the equivalent, in an appropriate discipline, to at least a High Credit standard, AND have at least four years’ full-time or equivalent part-time certified experience in ministry.
Doctor of Philosophy: A 3-4 years full-time or 6-8 years part-time program of graduate study in theologically related disciplines by research and the submission of a thesis for candidates who have obtained or are qualified to obtain a four-year Bachelor degree, or the equivalent, in an appropriate discipline, to at least a Distinction standard.
Doctor of Theology: A 3-4 years full-time or 6-8 years part-time program of graduate study in theology and related disciplines by research and the submission of a thesis for candidates who have obtained or are qualified to obtain a four-year Bachelor degree, or the equivalent, in an appropriate discipline, to at least a Distinction standard.
