Gamification in education

Innovative Ideas – Kahoot!

Dr David Smith, Dean of Academics Australian College of Christian Studies

Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform that makes it easy to create and share learning quizzes in minutes. Kahoot! was built on the concept of using gamification in education, which is aimed at increasing student engagement and learning by including game-like elements in learning. Some of the benefits include:

  • Encourages participation
  • Supports curiosity
  • Provides instant feedback

With Kahoot! faculty can have one or two segments during a classroom or virtual lecture to test students on their understanding of the key concepts covered. It can also be used to quickly recap a previous lesson. By awarding points based on a combination of correct score and time taken to respond, and displaying scores in real time, Kahoot! creates a positive competitive atmosphere which fosters much participation. Quizzes can be conducted on an individual or group basis.

The results act as a real-time feedback mechanism for faculty because with each quiz you are able to see what questions students struggled with and therefore offer further explanation where needed.

Australian College of Christian Studies will be introducing this concept into some upcoming subjects.
